1. Eastern State Penitentiary – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Why It’s Haunted:
Opened in 1829, this gothic prison pioneered solitary confinement, leading to immense psychological suffering. It housed notorious criminals like Al Capone.

Why It’s Haunted:
Located near the Gettysburg battlefield, this inn was a Confederate sniper post. Over 100 bullet holes are still visible in the walls.

4. Fort William Henry – Lake George, New York

5. The Mount (Edith Wharton's Estate) – Lenox, Massachusetts

A large, white, two-story mansion sits on a hillside. It has many windows with dark shutters, and a large covered porch or veranda. There are several chimneys, and a cupola on the roof. 6. Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum – Weston, West Virginia

  • History: A 19th-century psychiatric hospital with a dark history of overcrowding and mistreatment.
  • Hauntings: Apparitions, screams, and ghostly figures reported by visitors and ghost hunters.
  • Tours: Daytime history tours and nighttime ghost hunts are available.

7. The Stanley Hotel’s Northeast Twin: The Mount Washington Hotel – Bretton Woods, New Hampshire

  • History: Built in 1902, this luxury hotel hosted presidents and elites—but not all of them left.
  • Hauntings: Room 314 is especially haunted by Carolyn Stickney, the original owner's wife, who has been seen brushing her hair.
  • Vibe: Ghosts in turn-of-the-century dress are said to roam the halls.

Fort Mifflin – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

  • History: One of the only remaining Revolutionary War battlefields that’s still intact.
  • Hauntings: Soldiers and prisoners who died here are said to haunt the grounds. Screams are often heard from the “Screaming Woman” in Casemate 11.
  • Creepy Bonus: Used during the Civil War and World War I, adding layers of ghost lore.
